discussion
At first glance, RET 706-5 appeared to be assignable
to A. penetratrix;
however, the umbo of the present
species is distinctly tan rather than brown; and the
remainder of the cap is a solid pale gray at first
and not virgate.
Also, sequencing of RET 706-5 revealed that
the 5' motif of the nrLSU sequence was the typical
one for sect. Vaginatae and not the less
common TCTGACCTCAAATCA,
which is found in A. penetratrix,
A. penetrans, A. chiricahuana,
and a number pf other species. For a current
list of
the latter group of taxa see the techtab of A.
penetratrix (link above).
According to BLAST runs, the present species clusters
most closely with a number of
North American species, provisional species, and
temporary codes presently
assigned to Amanita
stirps Fulva: A.
carolinensis, A. fuligineodisca, A.
fulva, A. sp-amerifulva01, and A.
sp-amerifulva02.

Spore data for collections provisionally identified as: Amanita pseudopenetrans Tulloss and Kudzma
Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer;
and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set.
Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences
(which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which
a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
