Due to delays in data processing at GenBank, some accession numbers may lead to unreleased (pending) pages.

TAN [lost in fire per Dr. Bart Buyck (pers. comm.)]; other original material in PC
intro
The following text may make multiple use of each data field.
The field may contain magenta text presenting data from a type study
and/or revision of other original material cited in the protolog of the present taxon.
Macroscopic descriptions in magenta are a combination of data from the protolog and
additional observations made on the exiccata during revision of the cited original
material.
The same field may also contain black text, which is data from a revision of the present
taxon (including non-type material and/or material not cited in the protolog).
Paragraphs of black text will be labeled if further subdivision of
this text is appropriate.
Olive text indicates a specimen that has not been
thoroughly examined (for example, for microscopic details) and marks other places in the text
where data is missing or uncertain.
The following text is based on the protolog of the present species.
pileus
exceeding 100 mm wide, with beautiful shade of red, convex at first, eventually with margin upturned, viscid; context white, except orange just below pileipellis; margin distinctly short-striate, nonappendiculate; universal veil absent; pileipellis separable from the context.
lamellae
rather distant, pinkish white; lamellulae abundant.
stipe
up to 100 × 15± mm, whitish, narrowing upward, flaring at apex; bulb not described; context not described; exannulate, but with concolorous fibrils in an “annular zone”; universal veil concolorous with stipe, either limbate (according to illustration in protolog) or saccate (according to placement in protolog).
odor/taste
Odor weak; taste sweet.
macrochemical tests
The protolog supplies the following results: FeSO4 - negative. Guaiac - negative. H2SO4 - negative. KOH - negative. NH4OH - negative. Pyramidon?? - negative.
basidiospores
[-/-/-] 7.0 - 10.0 × 5.5 - 7.0 µm, inamyloid; apiculus not described; contents not described; cream white in deposit.
ecology
Under Eucalyptus in plantations. Period of basidiome appearance reported as very short.
material examined
MADAGASCAR, REPUBLIC OF: Ambohidempona, 19.i.1942 G. Bouriquet G77 (paratype, PC).
discussion
The holotype of this species is lost. More original material may be in PC per protolog.
To decide upon placement to section, Tulloss choses to follow the illustration in the protolog and, consequently, proposes placement of this species in Amanita sect. Amanita.
All material from Bouriquet with collection numbers beginning with "G" was sent to PC as representative of Bouriquet's novel species in April 1947 with a cover letter retained in PC that says nothing about types.

Spore data for collections provisionally identified as: Amanita hovae Bouriquet
Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer;
and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set.
Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences
(which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which
a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
