intro |
Olive text indicates a specimen that has not been
thoroughly examined (for example, for microscopic details) and marks other places in the text
where data is missing or uncertain. This entity is based on a specimen sent for identification by M. Mata (INBio, Sto. Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica). The habit, spore size and shape, and pigmentation suggest relationship to taxa such as A. flavoconia in sect. Validae. The macroscopic description is based on the annotations of C. Cano, the collector. The remainder of the description is based on original research of R. E. Tulloss.
pileus | 50 - 60 mm wide, warm tan (57 1.Br.) over disc, brown (58 m.Br.) toward margin, concave; context pale sordid pink (31 p.y.Pk); margin probably nonstriate at least at first; universal veil as pale orange cream warts (70 1.OY), probably originally brilliant yellow (83 Brill.Y).
lamellae | free, very crowded, pale sordid pink (31 p.y.Pk) [probably in mass, because concolorous with pulverulence on upper stipe], 3 - 5 mm broad; lamellulae present.
stipe | 55 - 75 × 3 - 5 mm, pale sordid pink above partial veil, warm tan (57 1.Br.) below partial veil, pulverulent above partial veil, fibrillose below it; bulb small, not strongly distinguished; context as in pileus; partial veil median, pale yellow (89 p.Y.), with margin decorated with brilliant yellow ((83 brill.Y.) universal veil material; universal veil not observed.
odor/taste | not recorded.
macrochemical tests |
none recorded. | ||||||||
basidiospores | [20/1/1] (7.0-) 7.4 - 9.1 (-11.3) × (4.9-) 5.0 - 6.5 μm, (L = 8.2 μm; W = 5.9 μm; Q = (1.28-) 1.29 - 1.60 (-1.65); Q = 1.38), hyaline, colorless, smooth, thin-walled, amyloid, dominantly ellipsoid, occasionally broadly ellipsoid or elongate, adaxially flattened; apiculus sublateral, cylindric; contents granular to mono- or mulitguttulate with or without additional small granules; color in deposit not recorded.

discussion |
The following figure provides a comparison of the sporographs of the present species with those of some apparently similar taxa with similar ranges of Q values for their spores: A. flavoconia var. inquinata and A. sp-10: Of the three taxa, the two brown-capped species have the most similar spores. This similarity should be investigated further.

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
