intro |
The following text may make multiple use of each data field. The field may contain magenta text presenting data from a type study and/or revision of other original material cited in the protolog of the present taxon. Macroscopic descriptions in magenta are a combination of data from the protolog and additional observations made on the exiccata during revision of the cited original material. The same field may also contain black text, which is data from a revision of the present taxon (including non-type material and/or material not cited in the protolog). Paragraphs of black text will be labeled if further subdivision of this text is appropriate. Olive text indicates a specimen that has not been thoroughly examined (for example, for microscopic details) and marks other places in the text where data is missing or uncertain. The following material is derived from the protolog of the present taxon.
pileus | from protolog: hemispheric at first, then convex, finally depressed over disc, with width about twice stipe length at maturity (all per figure); context thickness ca. 20% of pileus radius (per figure); margin nonstriate and lacking sterile extension and long remaining decurved even when somewhat elevated at maturity (per figure); universal veil as reddish spine-like warts, 3 - 4 mm high, densely set at first, moderately distant at maturity.
lamellae | from protolog: free and broadly ventricose (per figure); lamellulae not described.
stipe | from protolog: robust; context solid, probably white; bulb as clavate stipe base, not radicating; partial veil superior, membranous, skirt-like, persistent, attached to narrow raised ring below apex; universal veil not evident. [Note: entirely based on fig. 3 of protolog.—ed.]
odor/taste | not described.
macrochemical tests |
from paratype: Guaiac - negative. Pyramidon - negative. NH4OH - negative. KOH - negative. FeSO4 - negative. H2SO4 - negative. POISONOUS as in the case of Amanita robusta sensu Bouriquet.

basidiospores | from protolog: [5/-/-] 8.0 - 10.2 × 4.4 - 6.8 μm, (L' = 9.3 μm; W' = 5.4 μm; Q = 1.50 - 1.95; Q' = 1.72), ellipsoid to elongate, often adaxially flattened (per figure); apiculus sublateral (per figure); contents mono- or multiguttulate; color in deposit not recorded (probably white). [Note: Based entirely on scale drawings of spores in fig. 4 of protolog.—ed.]
ecology | from protolog: Terrestral, frequent in January and February, principly in populations of Eucalyptus.

from protolog: MADAGASCAR: unkn. loc., s.d. unkn. coll. s.n. (holotype, TAN, destroyed in fire). Antananarivo,
discussion |
According to the protolog, much more common than A. robusta sensu Bouriquet. This taxon is strongly differentiated from A. robusta sensu Bouriquet and very distinctive within sect. Lepidella where we suppose (until revision of the isotype is possible) that it belongs. It is certainly not closely related to A. robusta sensu Bouriquet as the publication at the rank of variety suggests. It is a distinct species. All material from Bouriquet with collection numbers beginning with "G" was sent to PC as representative of Bouriquet's novel species in April 1947 with a cover letter retained in PC that says nothing about types.

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
